About

Experienced technical teaching with calm, structured explanations.

Hello, I'm Garrie. I'm an experienced private tutor from the Glasgow area with 15 years of experience, specialising in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Computing Science, and Engineering from SQA Higher and A level through to undergraduate and postgraduate degree modules.

I graduated top of my class with a First Class Honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Glasgow in 2011, and have published academic research on advanced aerospace systems.

Over the years, I have helped hundreds of students across a wide range of qualifications and modules. Some work with me through their entire academic career from secondary school through to university graduation, building a strong foundation in their subject and adding depth from there. Others come for focused support before a crucial exam, to raise a grade for a university offer, prepare for entrance exams, or return to study after a break.

My approach focuses on clear explanations, structured problem solving, and developing genuine understanding, not just memorising methods.

Lessons are supported by a large library of carefully chosen resources, including decades of past papers and worked examples across school, college, and university-level topics.

PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme Member (Disclosure Scotland) - fully vetted to work with under 18s.

I was so lucky to come across Garrie on a tutoring platform as my son needed some help with his 2nd year degree in Electrical Engineering. Some of the lecturers fail to engaging so finding Garrie was so helpful. Having his one to one tuition really helped my son. He was friendly , knowledgeable and has lots of experience. I would definitely recommend him. 👍🏼

Garrie has been my tutor for Higher and Advanced Higher, helping me with Chemistry and Mathematics throughout both years. He has been an excellent tutor and answers any last minute calls for help whenever I need them. His online sessions are extremely beneficial and there hasn't been one lesson where I'm left confused afterwards. He provides lots of extra materials and documents to look through, and his explanations and workings are easy to follow and replicate. Overall, I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor that specialises in STEM subjects at various levels.

FAQ

Common questions

Answers to some frequently asked questions. If it's not covered here, just get in touch.

What are your qualifications?+

I have a First Class BEng Honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, graduating in 2011. I was on the Dean's Honours List for four years in a row and received the class prize for best exam performance in each of my four years.

What experience do you have?+

I have 15 years' experience as a private tutor, helping over 500 students achieve top grades, meet university conditions, pass entrance exams, prepare for resits, and return to higher education. I have also worked with corporate clients, helping apprentices pass academic qualifications. I regularly help with last-minute emergency exam preparation across maths, physics, engineering, computing, and related technical subjects. I was also a teaching assistant and research assistant at the University of Glasgow from 2014 to 2015, where I taught Dynamics M5 and robotics, and conducted research in Future Cities. I later carried out postgraduate research at the University of Strathclyde, where I also undertook tutoring duties, and I am a published author in IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. Over the years I have supported students from universities across the UK and covered all major UK exam boards, including Scottish SQA, OCR, AQA, Eduqas, and WJEC.

What levels do you teach?+

I tutor Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers, UK AS and A levels, college courses, and undergraduate and postgraduate engineering modules.

Do you provide ongoing weekly tutoring or one-off help?+

Both. Some students book regular weekly sessions, while others get help with a specific exam, assignment topic, or difficult module. My approach is tailored to the time available and the depth of understanding you want to build.

Do you provide past paper resources?+

Yes. Over the years, I've built a large library of resources for subjects at different levels, including past papers going back decades. You will not need to spend more on textbooks or past papers; you'll have the practice material you need.

Can you help with university resits?+

Yes. I regularly help students prepare for resits in engineering mathematics, mechanics, electronics, fluid mechanics, control, MATLAB, and related subjects. Even if time is short, a few focused sessions can make a meaningful difference.

Do you offer online lessons?+

Yes. Online lessons are available with a 5% discount, and work well for maths, physics, chemistry, computing, engineering, and university-level technical subjects. Lessons take place on Zoom, with screen sharing and handwritten worked solutions in real time. After each session, I'll send you a PDF of what we covered, along with any other resources you need.

Do you tutor from your home or travel to students?+

Lessons can take place online, from my home workspace, at the student's home, or somewhere in between, where location and availability allow.

Are you DBS checked / what safeguarding checks do you have?+

I am a member of the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme through Disclosure Scotland, which is the official safeguarding system in Scotland for those working with children. This is the Scottish equivalent of an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check used in England and Wales, but with the added benefit of ongoing monitoring rather than being a one-time certificate. I’m happy to provide proof of my PVG membership on request.
